Box Score

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 14 Wichita State jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and used a 21-2 second-half run to pull away from the Drake University men's basketball team, 74-40, Sunday afternoon at Koch Arena.

Drake (4-16, 1-7 MVC) was led by Reed Timmer's (New Berlin, Wis.) eight points on 4-of-9 shooting as the Bulldogs were held to 38.5 percent shooting. Chris Caird (Daventry, England) and Gary Ricks, Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif.) each added six points.

Wichita State (18-2, 8-0 MVC) was paced by 15 points from Ron Baker and 10 from Tekele Cotton including a pair of second-half dunks that energized an already frenetic sellout crowd of 10,506.

Wichita State jumped out to a 5-0 and added to that tally before four points from Timmer in the first four minutes of the half pulled the Bulldogs within two possessions, 9-4, with 15:54 left in the half. However, Drake's offense was held without a field goal for the next four minutes until Karl Madison (Springfield, Ill.) penetrated for a layup to make the score 16-8.

A four-minute drought followed as three-straight turnovers helped the Shockers extend their lead to 20-8. The Bulldogs would trim that margin down to 10 twice in the remainder of the half, but WSU continued to add to its lead, taking a 36-19 lead into halftime.

Timmer led the Bulldogs with six points in the half as the team shot 35 percent from the field while not converting a three-point attempt. Wichita State, paced by eight points from Baker, shot 50 percent from the field with five three-pointers in the opening half.

The Bulldogs tried to keep pace with WSU in the opening minutes of the second half until the Shockers converted on five straight shots to take their largest lead of the game to that point, 53,31, with 11:41 left in the contest. Drake had no answer for that charge as WSU would go on to hit 11-of-13 shots at one point to engineer a 21-2 run to give the Shockers a 74-35 lead with three minutes left in the contest.

Drake continues its two-game MVC road swing on Wednesday evening when it travels to Bradley for the first meeting between the two programs this season. Tip off at Carver Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
