Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) and sophomore Brooke Salisbury (Kearney, Mo.) each scored one goal for the Drake women's soccer team as the Bulldogs earned a 2-1 win over Indiana State Friday night at Cownie Soccer Complex.
Drake improved to 5-7 overall and 2-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play as Indiana State drops to 4-7 and 0-1 in the MVC.
Rodgers struck early for the game's first goal in sixth minute as sophomore Hannah Wilder (Wheatfield, Ind.) blasted a shot that Indiana State goalie Brittan San Roman blocked, but Rodgers quickly gathered the rebound and punched it in the net. Rodgers has 22 career goals, which ranks tied for third all-time with Elizabeth Woerle (2006-09) in program history.
Indiana State scored the equalizer in the 23rd minute as Sydney Loesing found Kate Johnson for Johnson's second goal of the year.
The Bulldogs responded in the 36th minute as Rodgers sent a corner kick in front of the net that junior Sarah Grace Nicholson (Overland Park, Kan.) headed off the crossbar, but Salisbury collected the ball and blasted it past San Roman for her first career goal and the deciding score.
Drake had several close calls in the final half to stretch the lead, but couldn't find the net as the Bulldogs finished with a season-high 20 shots in the game.
Drake travels to Oklahoma State for a midweek contest on Oct. 7 before returning to conference action at Evansville on Oct. 10.
