Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Ivan Gutierrez scored a golden goal for the SIUE Cougars to edge the Drake men's soccer team, 3-2, in double-overtime Saturday night in Missouri Valley Conference play at Cownie Soccer Complex.
Drake (9-4-1, 3-1 MVC) struck first as sophomore Gabe Edel (Greenwood, Ind.) scored his third goal of the season at the 24-minute mark (23:53). Edel's goal was set up by junior Mueng Sunday's (Coralville, Iowa) nice pass to a sprinting Edel who punched it in the bottom right corner to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. Sunday leads the team in assists with six on the year.
SIUE (9-4-1, 3-1 MVC) answered at the 54-minute mark (54:18) off a goal by Jabari Danzy who knocked in a header by Drake goalie Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) to even the game at 1-1.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead back at the 71-minute (70:30) mark off junior James Wypych's (Wellington, New Zealand) header goal. Wypych's team-leading sixth goal of the season came off a nice cross by Edel.
However, Drake's lead was short-lived as SIUE quickly answered with Danzy's second goal of the game at 73-minute mark (72:57). Danzy's had his initial shot from the right box blocked by MacLeod, but Danzy gathered the rebound and drilled it in the net to tie the game at 2-2.
Drake, who dominated total shots (17) and shots on goal (13) in the game, had several near misses in the first overtime period that would have won the game, but they just missed. Redshirt sophomore Nick Manzoni (Orono, Minn.) drilled a ball off the cross bar at the 97-minute mark (97:09) and just 47 seconds (97:56) later Wpych lined a shot off the post.
SIUE had the golden goal on the first shot by either team in the second overtime period. Gutierrez shot from deep on the right side as the ball was just inches away from the hands of a diving MacLeod.
Drake returns to the pitch next Saturday, Oct. 31 at Loyola with kickoff against the Ramblers set for 7 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Park.
