POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Senior Blake Huser shot one-over par to lead the Drake men's golf team on the first day of the Old Dominion University/Outer Banks Invitational at the Kilmarlic Golf Club on Sunday.
“We played okay today despite several doubles and triples. If each player can eliminate one or two mistakes we would have shot a great number,” said head coach Matt Lewis.
Three strokes separate the Bulldogs top-three scorers. Huser fired a 72 (+1), good for tied 30th-place while freshman Tommi Avant registered a 73 (+2), good for tied for 38th-place. Sophomore Matt Lavery carded a 74 while sophomore Drew Ison and freshman Jack Kennedy shot a 76 and 77, respectively.
“Drew is pretty sick which I know made today a challenge. Hopefully with a good nights sleep he can turn the corner and feel better,” said Lewis.
Overall, Drake combined for a score of 295 to be in 13th-place and are just five strokes from seventh-place Drexel and James Madison.
“It's going to be tougher tomorrow with stronger winds projected,” noted Lewis
The Bulldogs will play the second round of the ODU/OBX Invitational on Tuesday and then complete the 55-hole event on Tuesday.
