Des Moines, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis team won its second match of the weekend by defeating No. 51 Dartmouth, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 5-1 on the young season while Dartmouth falls to 3-3.
Drake started the match off on the right foot by securing the pivotal doubles point thanks to the tandem of Bayo Phillips (Houston, Texas) and Ben Stride (Bognor Regis) handling their opponent at No. 3 doubles, 6-2. Matt Frost (London, England) and Ravi Patel (London, England) also claimed their doubles match at No. 2, 6-2.
Dartmouth evened the match at No. 5 singles with Ciro Riccardi defeating Calum MacGeoch (Edinburgh, Scotland) in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, in MacGeoch's Drake debut.
At No. 3, Frost put Drake back on top with a 6-3, 6-3, win Dartmouth tied the match with a 7-6, 6-2, win by Chris Kipouras over No. 30 Ben Lott (Newcastle, England).
Philips, who helped propel Drake to the doubles point, put the Bulldogs up for good with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, win at No. 6 over Max Fliegner. Patel then won the crucial fourth point at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Brendan Tannenbaum.
In the final match of the day to finish, Dartmouth's No. 65 Dovydas Sakinis upended No. 30 Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina), 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Bulldogs continue their dual match season with four matches next weekend with Friday matches against Gonzaga and UMKC. On Sunday, Feb. 8, the team hosts South Alabama and Omaha.
