DES MOINES, Iowa – One stroke divided Drake University men's golf team and Creighton on Monday, March 30, as the Bulldogs edged out the Bluejays, 310-311, in a weekday dual at the Wakonda Club.
Six golfers from each school competed in the match with the top four scores for each side counting towards the team score.
“The course played extremely difficult today with the windy conditions. I was proud of the guys in the way they battled in the tough conditions,” said Drake head coach Matt Lewis. “A huge round by Matt (Lavery) today was the difference in the team match.”
Freshman Matt Lavery (Peoria Ill.) led the Bulldogs with the day's lowest round of 74 which was just two strokes over par.
Junior Will McDonald (Tulsa, Okla.) carded a 78, while Dane Worley (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), Devin Leland (Huxley, Iowa) and Drew Ison (Edmond, Okla.) each recorded a 79. Blake Huser rounded out the Bulldogs effort with an 82.
Playing as an individual, Karter Smith (Detroit Lakes, Minn) turned in an 82.
The Bulldogs return to tournament play on Friday at the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill.
