ST. LOUIS – Senior Rebekah Schmidt (Cottage Grove, Minn.) of the Drake University softball team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season, the league office announced Monday, April 6 afternoon.
Schmidt was instrumental in helping Drake finish 4-0 last week as she went 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA in the circle. She started the week with a shutout against the Iowa Hawkeyes on April 1, scattering six hits, one walk and one hit batter while striking out seven. She followed that with a complete game against Loyola on April 3 in the first game of a doubleheader as the Bulldogs run-ruled the Ramblers in six innings, 11-3. Schmidt allowed one earned run while striking out seven. In the series finale against Loyola on April 4 she allowed one earned run while striking out three. Schmidt also contributed at the plate going 3-for-9 (.333) with one double and four RBI in the four games.
Schmidt is 11-8 with a 2.82 ERA on the season with 114 strikeouts. Her three victories last week give her 48 career wins, which ranks seventh in school history.
A busy week of road games for Drake begins Tuesday, April 7 with a doubleheader at Nebraska with first pitch of game one set for 5 p.m. On Wednesday, April 8 Drake makes the short trip to face the Iowa State Cyclones at the Cyclones Sports Complex for a single game at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs return to Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend as they travel to Southern Illinois for three games, April 11-12.
