Women's Soccer Falls To UMKC, 1-0, In Season Opener

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake women's soccer team dropped its season opener to the UMKC Kangaroos, 1-0, Friday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

Kangaroos forward Niki Lynch scored the deciding goal off a cross from Reighan Childers at the 11:24 mark in the opening half.

Drake (0-1) mounted a furious comeback attempt after the UMKC (1-0) goal. The Bulldogs tallied 10 shots with seven shot on goal in the contest while the Kangaroos had 14 shots and seven on goal. Freshman Linda Fiorito (Overland Park, Kan.) led the team with three shots on goal, including a header attempt that was saved by UMKC goalie, Nina Tzianos, in the second half.

Junior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) had the closet shot of the night for Drake. Rodgers blasted a shot off the crossbar at that 32:35 mark in the first half. She finished the game with two shots.

Drake closes the first weekend of the season with a Sunday, Aug. 23 morning matinee against Pacific at 11 a.m.
