Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake men's soccer team rallied to beat the Pacific Tigers, 2-1, Friday evening at the Cownie Soccer Complex. Drake (1-0) had goals from sophomore Alex Prusa (Omaha, Neb.) and senior Alec Bartlett (Overland Park, Kan.) in the comeback win.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Bulldogs outshoot the Tigers, 11-4, Gaku Lange put Pacific on the scoreboard early in the second half as he slipped past the Bulldogs' defense in the midst of a brief downpour and shot the ball past Bulldogs goalkeeper Darren MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) for the game's first goal. Spencer Vue was credited with an assist on the goal.
Prusa had the equalizer at the 69-minute mark (69:11) as he gathered the ball after a shot by his teammate Gabe Edel (Greenwood, Ind.) was blocked by the Pacific goalkeeper Curtis Goldsmith. Prusa, who transferred from Creighton last spring, then blasted it in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Edel earned the assist on the goal.
Bartlett scored with just under 10 minutes left in the contest. Junior James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) was fouled in the box and Drake was granted a penalty kick. Bartlett calmly struck the ball and put it just out of the reach of Goldsmith for the game winner.
MacLeod finished with six saves while the Bulldogs tallied 23 shots, including eight on goal, in the game. Barlett finished with a game-high six shots. Friday's win was the first career victory for Drake interim head coach Gareth Smith.
Drake travels to Green Bay for a Sunday afternoon contest with a 1 p.m. first kick against the Phoenix.
