DES MOINES, Iowa – The South Dakota State Jackrabbits edged the Drake women's soccer team, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
Drake (2-2) outshot South Dakota State (2-1), 16-12, and 12-6 on shots on goals, but the Bulldogs allowed two errors that led to Jackrabbit goals.
South Dakota State scored its first goal of the contest 11:36 minutes in as Alyssa Brazil converted off an assist from Diana Potterveld. The play started with a throw in that caught the Bulldogs' defense out of place as Potterveld found Brazil for the score.
Drake junior Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) made her season debut Sunday and provided a major spark. Armstrong scored the equalizer at the 31-minute (30:51) mark. Freshman Vanessa Kavan (Lincoln, Neb.) recorded her first career assist on Armstrong's goal.
The score finished 1-1 at halftime. However, South Dakota State scored the eventual game winner at the 52-minute mark (51:53) in the second period on a penalty kick. Drake junior defender Sarah Grace Nicholson (Olathe, Kan.) was called for a foul in the Drake box, which led to the penalty kick by Madison Yueill as she shot one past Drake goalie Brooke Dennis (Wauconda, Ill.).
Drake had several opportunities to tie the game after Yueill's goal, Armstrong nearly had her second goal of the game, but her shot sailed high over the crossbar. Junior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) also had two shots that nearly went in, but just missed.
Drake travels west for its next two games as the Bulldogs play first at Northern Colorado on Friday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. CST, before closing the trip with a game at Wyoming on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. CST.
