Box Score GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Phoenix struck early in a 1-0 victory over the Drake men's soccer team Sunday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium in Green Bay.
Drake (1-1) goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) was called for a penalty in his own box just 1:20 into the contest and Green Bay (1-1) was granted a penalty kick. Audi Jepson converted the penalty kick, as the Phoenix then had to hold off a hard charge from the Bulldogs.
“Overall it was a strong performance,” said interim head coach Gareth Smith. “Disappointed with the result, but there was a lot of positive aspects to our performance, especially in possession. Other than a momentary lapse in concentration in the first two minutes, which is the difference at this level, we dominated the game from start to finish.”
Drake had scoring opportunities with 15 shots and one shot on goal. Freshman Nic Jaimes (Olathe, Kan.) paced the Bulldogs with four shots and the team's only shot on goal.
“We had a number of chances to score and should have won, but lacked a cutting edge and a little quality in the key goal scoring chances,” commented Smith. Which could be a result of a hard fought comeback win over Pacific Friday. Overall lots of positives today, but still plenty of room for growth.”
Drake travels to the ProRehab Classic hosted by Evansville, where the Bulldogs will face Belmont on Sept. 4 and Air Force on Sept. 6. First kick against Belmont is 5 p.m. while the Bulldogs and Falcons play at 11 a.m.
