BEIJING, China - On the final day of the World Championships, it came down to a jump off for the men's high jump gold, and Canadian Derek Drouin prevailed under pressure to win at 7-08.
Drouin, the 2014 and 2015 Drake Relays champion in the elite high jump, had tied with Chinese favorite Guowei Zhang (2015 Drake Relays-7th) and Bohdan Bondarenko, the defending world champion from Ukraine. All went to a jump off at 7-8.75 and missed. Druoin was first up at 7-08 and made the height while Zhang and Bondarenko had close misses to tie for silver. Druoin set the Canadian national record and Drake stadium record of 7-10.5 at the 2014 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.
The USA men brought home the gold in the 4x400m relay with 2014 Drake Relays elite 400m champion LaShawn Merritt anchoring them to victory in 2:57.82. Also on the US team was Tony McQuay, who placed fourth in the 400m at the 2015 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.
The USA women took the 4x400m relay silver with three of the four runners, Sanya Richards-Ross, Natasha Hastings and Francena McCorory, all being 2015 Drake Relays competitors. McCorory was the 2015 Drake Relays elite 400m champion while Richards-Ross was second, and Hastings fifth. Novlene Williams-Mills (2015 Drake Relays-3rd) anchored Jamaica to the gold medal in the 4x400m relay.
The 2013 Drake Relays women's elite high jump champion, Ruth Beitia of Spain, placed fifth in that event jumping 6-6.25.
