Women's Soccer Rallies At Saint Louis To Win, 4-3

Box Score

ST. LOUIS – The Drake women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to rally past the Saint Louis Billikens, 4-3, Sunday at Hermann Stadium.

“This was a big win for us in many ways,” said head coach Lindsey Horner. “To be down 2-0 on the road, we could have easily responded differently, but we completely stole the momentum and took over.”

Drake (3-5-0) fell behind 2-0 as Saint Louis (4-3-0) struck for its first goal late in the first half and added another nearly nine minutes in to the final half.

Drake quickly responded after the second goal as junior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with her third goal of the season. Rodgers' goal came at the 56:55 mark off an assist from junior Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).

A pair of Bulldog freshmen, Linda Fiorito (Overland Park, Kan.) and Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.), each scored Drake's next goals to give them the lead. Fiorito collected a Billiken clearance to score her first career goal at the 60:08 mark while Brand tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the year at the 63:52 mark. Hurt earned the assist on Brand's goal while there was no assist on Fiorito's.

Senior Rhian Pritchard (Prairie Village, Kan.) extended the Bulldog lead to 4-2 with her first goal of the season at the 83:56 mark. Rodgers earned the assist on Pritchard's goal. Saint Louis added one more goal late, but the rally attempt fell short as Drake snapped its four-game losing streak.

“We saw a different Becca Rodgers out there in the second half,” commented Horner.  “Kayla Armstrong kept us going and Haley Morris changed the game when she saved the penalty. Honestly at this point we had worked hard to deserve better results, but today was well earned against a very good Saint Louis team that is hard to beat at home.”

Sophomore goalie Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa) earned her first start of 2015 and collected a game-high eight saves.

Drake has a week off to prepare for a busy, tough stretch of its schedule. First for the Bulldogs will be an in-state clash versus Iowa State on Sept. 20 at Cownie Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. After the game with the Cyclones, the Bulldogs host Creighton on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. before traveling to defending Missouri Valley Conference champions, Illinois State on Sept. 26.

“We will take some time to recover as we lead into another big stretch coming up with a Big 12 opponent, BIG EAST team and the defending MVC champions.
