Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) finished with a pair of goals for the Drake men's soccer team as the Bulldogs scored three goals in the second half to cruise past UMKC, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Cownie Soccer Complex.
Wypych, who missed Drake's previous game against Butler due to an injury, had a big impact in his return to the pitch scoring his first goals of the season at the 24:33 mark in the opening half and the 55:12 mark in the final half.
Wypych's first goal came after a long pass from teammate Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa) as he went one-on-one with UMKC (2-1-1) goalie, Henrik Regitnig, who blocked Wypych's first shot, but Wypych collected the rebound and buried it in the net. His second goal came after he beat the Kangaroos' defense and blasted another shot by Regitnig.
Drake (4-2) wasn't done scoring though as sophomore Gabe Edel (Greenwood, Ind.) scored his first goal of 2015 in the 63rd (63:25) minute. Regitnig misplayed a ball that Edel quickly stole and punched it in the net.
The final score of the night came courtesy of redshirt sophomore Nick Manzoni (Orono, Minn.), who scored his first career goal at the 69:56 mark. Redshirt junior Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn.) rocketed a shot that was blocked by Regitnig before being corralled by Manzoni who found the back of the net.
Drake goalie Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) and the Bulldogs' defense stonewalled the UMKC offense as the Kangaroos had just four shots, including only one shot on goal. The shutout was the second of the season for Drake.
Drake plays next on Saturday when the Bulldogs welcome BIG EAST member, DePaul, to Cownie with first kick against the Blue Demons set for 7 p.m.
