Armstrong Records Hat Trick To Lead Women’s Soccer Past Missouri State, 3-1

Drake concludes the 2016 regular season at Loyola on Oct. 27

DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Kayla Armstrong (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) scored a hat trick to lead the Drake University women's soccer team past Missouri State, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 22 afternoon in Missouri Valley Conference action at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

"The early goal was important today," said Drake head coach Lindsey Horner. "Credit to Gabby Charles for earning the foul that earned our penalty kick early. We knew at halftime the second goal of the game was crucial. We settled down in the second half and controlled the tempo of the game. Kayla is playing very well right now and is a proven threat when she picks up the ball."

Armstrong, who scored the golden goal in Drake's 1-0 win over Iowa State Tuesday night, completed the hat trick recording her sixth, seventh and eighth goals of the season. She leads Drake (11-4-2, 1-3-1 MVC) in goals scored and is second in the MVC.

Armstrong's first goal was during the seventh-minute (7:43) and came off a penalty kick on a foul in the box by Missouri State (5-8-3, 1-3-1 MVC). In the 75th minute of the game (75:20), Armstrong scored again with an assist from junior Rachel Wanninger (Johnston, Iowa). During the 87th minute, Armstrong recorded the hat trick after beating the Missouri State defense and sending the ball in the far post.

The Bears responded with their goal during the 89th minute after Mayleigh Odor scored off a corner kick. Drake, who played 21 players, had many of its reserves in the game at this point.

"Our defenders were very good throughout, so it was unfortunate that we had a lapse in concentration at the end to concede the late goal," Horner said. "Overall, it was a very good team performance, but we still need to keep improving to put forth a full 90 minutes and finish our chances when we are on top. We are looking forward to building on this momentum on Thursday night."

Drake held Missouri State to just five shots on goal compared to the Bulldogs' 11 shots. Drake senior goalie Brooke Dennis (Wauconda, Ill.) finished with four saves.
Prior to the match, Drake honored its senior class as Armstrong, Charles (Wausau, Wis.), Dennis, Alex Freeman (Duluth, Minn.) and defender Sarah Grace Nicholson (Overland Park, Kan.) played their final home match.

Drake concludes the 2016 regular season at Loyola on Oct. 27 with first kick set for 6 p.m. The match against the Ramblers will be broadcast on The Valley On ESPN3.
