Quick Start Lead Bulldogs Past Camels, 33-21

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University football team used a quick start to propel past the Campbell Fighting Camels, 33-21, on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.

Drake took advantage of two Campbell miscues to help jump out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead.

"We came out, started really well and we needed to do that because we haven't been doing that this year," said Drake head coach Rick Fox. "Whenever we are able to force turnovers its big and when we are able to take advantage of them that's even bigger."

Sophomore Zac Rujawitz recovered a muffed punt on Campbell's five-yard line after Drake went three-and-out on the opening drive of the game. One play later, Grant Kraemer found Andrew Yarwood in the back of the end zone, scoring the first points of the game.

On Campbell's ensuing drive, junior Terry Wallen intercepted Anthony Robbins, setting up Drake's offense on the Camels' 17-yard line.

"It was kind of a bad throw by the quarterback and I took advantage of it," said Wallen. "It was a big play causing good momentum for our team and helped push us forward in the first-quarter."

Then on the second play of the drive, Kraemer threw 12-yard touchdown pass to Zach Zlabis, putting Drake up 14-0.

The Bulldogs closed out their first-quarter scoring with a 29-yard field goal by Josh Lee.

The Camels finally got on the board midway through the second quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from Robbins to Austin Fleming, cutting Drake's lead to 17-7.

With less than two-minutes left in the opening half, Kraemer completed two-straight 20-plus yard passes to get the Bulldogs deep into Camels' territory. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs their drive stalled in the red zone, but Lee drilled a 27-yard field goal to give Drake a 20-7 halftime lead.

The Camels made it a six-point game, 20-16, midway through the third-quarter when Robbins completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Blockmon.

The Bulldogs responded on their next possession with a 87-yard 12-play scoring drive, which was capped off by a two-yard touchdown run by Conley Wilkins, 26-14.

The Camels put it back to a single-score game, 26-21, early in the fourth-quarter when Jared Joyner dove in for a two-yard touchdown run.

The Bulldogs' offense once again answered with another long scoring drive, going 78 yards on 10 plays. Wilkins topped off the drive with five-yard touchdown run and ended his day with 82 yards rushing on 28 carries.

Drake's defense then came up with one more stop to allow the offense to run out the clock for the final score of 33-21.

Kraemer finished his day, completing 19-of-28 passes for a season-high 304 yards. Eric Saubert was Kraemer's top target as he recorded his fifth career 100-yard receiving game with 105 yards on five receptions.

Wallen recorded another interception in the second-quarter to help lead the defense. Fifth-year senior Caz Zyks was the team's top-tackler with eight stops, while Rory Driscoll and Taylor Coleman each tallied seven tackles.

The Bulldogs improve to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Pioneer Football League. The Camels settle to 3-4 and 1-3 in league action.

Next on Drake's slate is a trip to Florida on Nov. 5 to take on the Jacksonville Dolphins. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CDT.
