DES MOINES, Iowa – Central Arkansas scored a golden goal in the first overtime to complete a 3-2 comeback win over the Drake University men's soccer team on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Missouri Valley Conference action at the Cownie Soccer Complex. Prior to the match, senior night ceremonies were held for 12 student-athletes.
Drake (5-10-1, 2-5-1 MVC) staked an early 1-0 lead over Central Arkansas (6-7-1, 3-3-1 MVC) on junior
Steven Enna's (Overland Park, Kan.) goal in the 18
th minute (18:22). Senior
James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) sent a cross into the box and Enna rose up and headed the ball in the net for the goal, his fifth of the season.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Bulldogs at halftime. Each team finished with six shots in the opening half.
Just under 10 minutes into the final half, the Bears scored two goals that came within minutes of each other. The first goal was scored by Harris Partain in the 54
th minute (54:35) and the second was scored by Niklas Brodacki in the 57
th minute (57:54). Brodacki has scored a league-leading 13 goals this year.
Drake quickly went to work for the equalizer as the Bulldogs recorded five shots before finally breaking through. Sophomore
Nic Jaimes (Olathe, Kan.), who scored a golden goal to beat Bradley Wednesday night, came through again versus the Bears. Jaimes took a pass from redshirt freshman
Adam Nicholson (Iowa City, Iowa) and cleared space before firing a rocket past the keeper to far post to make the score 2-2 in the 73
rd minute (73:25).
The teams traded several good looks during the remainder of regulation, but neither team could finish it in regulation.
In the first overtime, Drake earned back-to-back corner kicks that resulted in a shot attempt by redshirt senior
Eric Williams (West Des Moines, Iowa), but the shot was saved.
Central Arkansas earned the win in the 93
rd minute as the Bears took advantage of a breakaway. Brodacki sent a pass to William Woody, who beat the defense and fired a shot past Drake goalkeeper
Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) for the game-winner.
The loss closes the conference regular season for the Bulldogs. They are locked into the sixth-seed for the MVC Tournament to be held in Springfield, Mo., from Nov. 8-13. Drake and seven-seed Bradley will play each other in the play-in game on Nov. 8 at 12 p.m., and the winner advances to play the third seed on Nov. 9 in the quarterfinals.
Before heading to the MVC Tournament, Drake closes the regular season Tuesday night when it hosts Western Illinois in non-conference action. First kick with the Leathernecks is scheduled for 7 p.m.
