Women’s Basketball Rallies Past Nebraska, 84-70

Drake has a fast turnaround with a Thursday morning game against Clark

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University women's basketball team rallied past Nebraska, 84-70, Tuesday, Dec. 6 night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
 
Senior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) paced Drake (4-3) with a team-high 18 points. Wendell eclipsed 2,000 points in the road win and is the just the fourth Bulldog to reach the impressive scoring mark. Overall, she filled the stat sheet with six rebounds, five steals and four assists.
 
Joining Wendell in double-figures was senior Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa) who recorded her 13th career points/assists double-double with 13 points and 13 assists. Freshman Brenni Rose (Shawnee, Kan.) added a career-high 10 points.
 
Drake, who trailed Nebraska (3-6), 33-32, at halftime, came out of the break dialed in as the Bulldogs made 8-of-10 shots including seven-straight field goals to build a 49-43 lead with 4:40 to go in the third quarter. Drake finished the period 12-of-17 from the floor with three three-pointers to lead 61-50 after three quarters of play.
 
The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 16 points in the final quarter on the way to their first win over Nebraska since Dec. 5, 2002. The Cornhuskers have a slim advantage in the all-time series at 10-9.
 
Drake overcame bad first-half shooting at 31.2 percent (10-of-32) to finish the game at 48.4 percent (31-of-64). The Bulldogs outrebounded the Cornhuskers, 42-34, and outscored them in the paint, 42-34.
 
Wendell is the first Bulldog since former standout Wanda Ford (1982-86) to score 2,000 or more career points. Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk earned her 75th career win with Tuesday's victory.
 
Drake hosts Clark in its annual "Pack The Knapp For Character Presented by the Greater Des Moines YMCA" Game Thursday at 11 a.m. Thousands of local elementary and middle school students will fill the Knapp Center stands for a fun-filled day of education and Bulldog basketball.
