DES MOINES, Iowa – Two late goals pushed the Drake University women's soccer team past Western Illinois, 2-0, Wednesday, Sept. 14 evening at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Drake (7-0-1) had goals from freshman
Shelley Lyjak (Bartlett, Ill.) and sophomore
Tawny Carroll (Streamwood, Ill.). The Bulldogs finished with their seventh shutout of the season and have allowed just one goal.
Lyjak's goal came first in the 72
nd minute (72:05) as she corralled a high cross from junior
Kasey Hurt (Ankeny, Iowa) deep in the box and blasted it in far post for her first career goal. The assist for Hurt is her team-leading fourth of the season.
Carroll's goal occurred in the 80
th minute (80:07) as she took a cross from sophomore transfer
Carling Goold (Oakville, Ontario) and shot it in far post for her second goal of the season. The assist for Goold is her first as a Bulldog. She transferred to Drake from Charlotte.
Drake limited Western Illinois (1-5-1) to just three shots, including not allowing a single shot in the final half of play. The Bulldogs finished with 17 shots. Senior goalkeeper
Brooke Dennis (Wauconda, Ill.) recorded two saves and improved her record in the net to 4-0.
Drake travels to Brookings, S.D., Sept. 18 to face South Dakota State at 1 p.m. The Jackrabbits edged the Bulldogs, 2-1, in Des Moines last season.
