DES MOINES, Iowa – For the second straight match, sophomore
Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.) of the Drake University women's soccer team scored the winning goal as her late goal helped defeat Milwaukee, 2-1, Sunday (Sept. 4) afternoon at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
Drake (4-0-1) and Milwaukee (3-2-1) traded goals in the first half with the Panthers going on the scoreboard first. Maria Stephens beat the Bulldogs' defense and junior
Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa) in the 28
th minute (28:53) to go up 1-0. It was the first goal allowed by the Bulldogs this season.
Drake did not take long to answer as sophomore
Tawny Carroll (Streamwood, Ill.) scored the equalizer in the 37
th minute (37:21). Carroll's goal was assisted by juniors
Kasey Hurt (Ankeny, Iowa) and
Rachel Wanninger (Johnston, Iowa) as Hurt sent a pass over the defense to Wanninger who found Carroll in the box for her second career goal and first of the season.
Following the goals, both teams had several strong looks to take the lead. Hurt had one of the best opportunities on a direct kick that Milwaukee goalie Mallory Geurts made a great diving stop on.
With the game clock winding down it was again Hurt that helped set up the score. She sent a lob pass to Brand, who collected the ball at the six-yard line and sent a rocket past a diving Geurts. Brand also had the deciding goal in Friday night's 1-0 win over South Dakota and she now leads the team in goals with three this season.
Morris finished with one save while Brand and Hurt finished with two and three shots on goal, respectively.
Drake travels to Annapolis, Md., for its next two matches as the Bulldogs participate in the Navy Invitational. The Midshipman are up first on Sept. at 6 p.m. followed by the final match of the invitational against Towson Sunday Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. Drake has never played Navy or Towson.
