Women’s Soccer Edges UNI, 2-1, For Seventh Consecutive Win

Drake will travel to Evansville on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. match in the first of three straight road games.

Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Sophomore Cassie Rohan (Palatine, Ill.) and redshirt senior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) scored goals for the Drake University women's soccer team in a 2-1 win over UNI in Missouri Valley Conference action on Wednesday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

Drake (10-3-1, 3-0-0 MVC) and UNI (10-3-1, 2-2-0 MVC) were originally supposed to play Tuesday night at Cownie, but the in-state match was pushed back a day due to rain in the Des Moines metro. The Bulldogs earned their first win over the Panthers since the 2011 season, and the victory broke a four-year run of the teams battling to a draw. With Wednesday's win, Drake has won seven consecutive matches and its first three MVC contests with its last loss on Sept. 7 to then No. 16 Wisconsin.

"We felt the first goal of the match was going to be crucial," said head coach Lindsey Horner. "Prior to Cassie's fantastic volley, we were very much on our heels but didn't break. We started the second half much better and Becca's goal was pure composure from a proper goal-scorer."

Rohan came off the bench at the 22nd minute mark of the first half and wasted little time making an impact. In the 35th minute (35:45), freshman Olivia Bruce (Lakeville, Minn.) passed her the ball and Rohan fired a deep volley shot that hit the side netting of the goal. It is the first goal of the season for Rohan and the first assist of Bruce's career.

Rodgers added the second goal in the 61st minute (61:46) after she collected a pass from junior Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.), beat the UNI defense and chipped a perfect ball over the head of the Panthers goalkeeper. Rodgers leads the MVC with 12 goals, and has now scored 11 goals in the past eight matches. Rodgers, who is Drake's all-time leading goals scorer, has 39 in her career which is fifth all-time in the MVC.

Drake just missed its sixth shutout as Jenny Wick scored off a corner kick in the 87th minute. Drake senior goalkeeper Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa) recorded six saves.

"This is the most organized UNI side we've played in a while and there's a reason they're nationally ranked for shutouts, but we had enough quality in our chances," Horner said.

"It's good to be able to come out with a win while our players didn't put together their best performance. As we hit the road for our next three games we have to continue to build on our momentum but improve on our consistency."

Drake will travel to Evansville on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. match in the first of three straight road games. The match with the Purple Aces will be broadcast on The Valley on ESPN3.
