DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University Athletic Department hosted its annual Raise The Purse luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 5 in the Courtside Club of the Shrivers Basketball Practice Facility.
 
"I would like to thank our chair members Suzie Burt and Laura Martin. Their support for this event demonstrates the power of philanthropy in the Des Moines area," said Drake Associate Athletics Director Patrick Tomka. "The event continues to grow year over year and we look forward further promoting the Drake brand and the good works of our student-athletes in the community."
 
The event began with a silent auction featuring more than 200 gently used designer and high-end purses and handbags and several Drake Athletics-themed bags. Following the lunch, a live auction, including a number of VIP packages, took place.
 
The luncheon closed with comments from head women's basketball coach Jennie Baranczyk, who shared one of the goals of Drake Athletics in the next five years, which is to make Drake Des Moines' university.
