Women’s Basketball Falls to Nebraska, 89-84, in Double Overtime

It was Drake’s second multiple overtime contest in the last six days, including last Sunday’s program-record four-overtime loss to Creighton.

DES MOINES, Iowa  The Drake University women's basketball team fell to Nebraska, 89-84, in double overtime Saturday afternoon, Dec. 9, at the Knapp Center.

Sophomore Brenni Rose (Shawnee, Kan.) scored a season-high 20 points for Drake (5-5). Sophomore Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) and junior Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) both contributed 18 points each. Hittner added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and made a career-high 10 free throws. Bachrodt filled the stat sheet with eight rebounds, four assists, a career-high three blocks and two steals.

Bachrodt knocked down four different buzzer beaters in the game, including a jumper at the end of the first overtime. Drake was able to force the second overtime despite being down by five points with just 33 seconds left in the extra period. Hittner converted a three-point play with 21 seconds, and after a quick foul from the Bulldogs followed by two missed Cornhuskers' free throws, Bachrodt's jumper from the top of the key dropped in and after an official review counted as the game went into second overtime. It was Drake's second multiple overtime contest in the last six days, including last Sunday's program-record four-overtime loss to Creighton.

In the second overtime, Nebraska (7-3) scored the first four points to lead 80-76. However, Drake scored five consecutive points to lead 81-80 with 1:51 left. Nebraska, though, had one final answer as it scored six straight to build a five-point cushion it would not relinquish as the Cornhuskers held on for an 89-84 victory.

Freshman Maddie Monahan (Silver Lake, Minn.) made a three-pointer 33 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Drake a 57-50 lead and later Hittner made two free throws to put the score at 59-52. Later, Nebraska fired back with a jumper to briefly take the lead 65-64, but Rose's three-pointer pushed Drake's lead to 67-64. After a three-pointer and a layup from Nebraska, the Cornhuskers took the lead once again 69-67 with less than three minutes left in the game. A layup from redshirt junior Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) tied the game once again at 69-69.

Redshirt junior Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.) rebounded a miss, was fouled and awarded two free throws with just two seconds left, but Jonas missed both. Nebraska rebounded the second miss and quickly called timeout with one final chance to win in regulation. After the inbounds on their side and a wild scramble for a loose ball, Nicea Eliely, gathered the ball and made a shot as time expired as it appeared the Cornhuskers won, 71-69. However, after an official review, the referees determined Hittner tipped the inbounds pass and the clock should have started earlier and run out before Eliely's apparent-winner. The basket was waived off as the game was sent to overtime.

Bachrodt beat the clock at the end of the first period and second periods with two-pointers, a three-pointer to end the third quarter and finally her top of the key jumper to force the second overtime.

Following Saturday's game, Drake welcomes South Dakota State on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 17, to the Knapp Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on The Valley on ESPN3.
