EUGENE, Ore. – The 42nd-ranked Drake University men's tennis team fell to BYU, 4-3, on Saturday at the Student Tennis Center in Oregon.
BYU clinched the doubles point with a hard fought 7-6(14) win by Aidan Carrazedo and Sam Tullis over
Tom Hands and
Barny Thorold.
The Bulldogs responded in singles in a dominating fashion by taking victories at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 3, respectively.
Vinny Gillespie, who is ranked 55th nationally, kept his unblemished singles record intact with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Keaton Cullimore. Hands cruised past Tullis, 6-2, 6-2, while
Ben Stride defeated Matthew Pearce, 6-3, 6-2 to give Drake a 3-1 lead.
The Cougars regained some momentum as John Pearce topped Thorold, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4; followed by a win at No. 2.
With the match tied 3-3, Carrazedo outlasted
Bayo Philips 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-2 at No. 6 to secure BYU's victory.
The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround as they play No. 23 Oregon on Sunday at 3 p.m. CST.
