Women’s Basketball Races Past Evansville, 73-48

The 11-0 start in MVC play is the best start in program history, and Sunday’s win was extra special as it was the 800th win in Drake women’s basketball history.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Five Bulldogs scored in double figures for the Drake University women's basketball team in a 73-48 victory at Evansville on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5) in Missouri Valley Conference action at the Ford Center.
 
The win improved Drake's record to 18-4 and 11-0 in MVC games as the Bulldogs have 12-straight victories. The 11-0 start in MVC play is the best start in program history, and Sunday's win was extra special as it was the 800th win in Drake women's basketball history.
 
Sophomore Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) led Drake (18-4, 11-0 MVC) with her first career double-double finishing with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds, including six offensive boards. Bachrodt nabbed five steals and has 11 in the past two games. Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.) also had a double-double with 11 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. Jonas also pulled down six offensive boards.
 
Joining Bachrodt and Jonas in double figures was freshman Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) with 11 points, senior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) with 11 and sophomore Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) had 10 points off the bench. Wendell extended her impressive double-figure scoring streak to 100 consecutive games, a streak that start her freshman season.  
 
Evansville (8-14, 3-8 MVC), who trailed 20-8 after one quarter, pulled back to within two points midway through the third quarter as the Bulldogs struggled to score in the second quarter and most of the third quarter. However, Drake's offense found the spark it sorely needed as six different Bulldogs scored in a 14-0 scoring run over the final 2:30 minutes in the third quarter to grab control of the game. Drake would lead by as many 27 points in the fourth quarter.
 
Drake held Evansville to just one three-pointer in the final two quarters after they made four in the first two quarters. The Bulldogs allowed just six Purple Aces' field goals in the third and fourth quarters. Evansville finished at 27.5 percent (14-of-51) shooting from the field, including 19.2 percent (5-of-26) behind the three-point line.
 
Drake led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter behind hot shooting, tough defense and unselfish play. The Bulldogs shot 60.0 percent, forced nine turnovers and scored 11 points off the miscues and handed out seven assists on nine field goals. Bachrodt nabbed four steals.
 
Drake struggled to shoot the basketball in the second quarter, missing all nine three-point attempts and making just five field goals. Ingle was able to score on a nifty layup right before the buzzer to take a 32-24 halftime lead. Miller sparked the Bulldogs off the bench with seven points.
 
Following Sunday's game, Drake returns to the Knapp Center to host Illinois State on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
