ITHACA, N.Y. – No. 18 Cornell managed to slip past the Drake University men's tennis team, 4-3, on Saturday at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
For the sixth-straight match, the Bulldog claimed the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead over the Big Red. Juniors
Calum MacGeoch and
Ben Wood steam rolled Chris Vrabel and Pietro Rimondini, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles. Sophomores
Vinny Gillespie and
Tom Hands secured the doubles point with 6-4 victory at No. 2.
Gillespie continued his dominating singles play and extended his winning streak to five-matches with a 6-0, 6-1 trouncing of Volfson at No. 1 singles.
The Big Red tied the match up at 2-2 with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Hands put the Bulldogs back on top after he defeated Vrabel, 6-4, 7-6(3) at No. 4.
Cornell then went on to win a pair of three-set matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to clinch the 4-3 win.
The Bulldogs travel Denver on March 31 and will square off against the Denver Pioneers on Friday and the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday.
