GREEN BAY, Wis. –
Paul Ciszewski (Germantown, Wis.) scored his first goal of the season to send the Drake University men's soccer team past Green Bay, 1-0, Wednesday evening at Aldo Santaga Stadium in Green Bay.
The Wisconsin native's score helped Drake (1-5-0) earn its first win of 2017 as it heads into Missouri Valley Conference play. The Bulldogs will welcome MVC newcomer Valparaiso (2-2-1, 1-0 MVC) on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. The Crusaders sit atop the Valley standings after edging preseason favorite Loyola, 2-1, on Sept. 1 in Chicago.
In the 51
st minute (51:17), senior
Mason Leonard (Overland Park, Kan.), who scored his first goal of the year Sunday against Western Michigan, sent a pinpoint cross to a driving Ciszewski who got his head on the ball in the box and sent it past the Green Bay (2-1-2) goalkeeper, Nikola Kahvedzic.
"I am pleased to see our performance rewarded with a tough away win this evening," said head coach
Gareth Smith. "We played and managed the game well for long spells and created a number of very good chances to score more goals. I'm pleased with the clean sheet and overall defensive organization which restricted Green Bay to limited clear opportunities in and around our box. Overall, it is a very good result and performance as we prepare for conference play this Saturday against Valpo."
Drake goalkeeper
Cade McCullough (Evansville, Ind.) collected his first career win and shutout with four saves.
Saturday's MVC match against Valparaiso at the Cownie Soccer Complex will be broadcast on
The Valley on ESPN3.
