Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior
Rachel Wanninger (Johnston, Iowa) scored a golden goal for the Drake University women's soccer team in a 2-1 win over UIC on Sunday afternoon at Cownie Soccer Stadium.
Wanninger's goal, the first this season for the local product, occurred in the 92
nd minute (92:11) off an attack by Drake (5-3-1) as she took a pass from freshman
Annie Schmitz (St. Louis, Mo.) and shot the ball past UIC (2-8) goalkeeper Tara Khayam for the Bulldogs' second overtime win this year.
Redshirt senior
Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) continues to climb the all-time goals list at Drake after her first-half score against the Flames. Rodgers, who leads the team with three scores, took a long pass from senior
Brooke Salisbury (Kearney, Mo.) and beat the Flames' defense and Khayam as she scored easily in an empty net in 39
th minute (39:01). Rodgers has 30 career goals, which is just two away from leader Andrea Schmitz (2002-05, 32).
UIC tied the match early in the second half, taking advantage of a bad clear by the Bulldogs' defense, as Naomi Rushe beat goalkeeper
Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa) in the 47
th minute (47:59).
"Overall, we had plenty of very good chances to put this game away earlier," said head coach
Lindsey Horner. "We are happy we earned the result, but our team knows we didn't play our best. With just a few games leading up to MVC play, we went deeper into our bench and some of our freshmen are taking advantage of their minutes and starting to kick on.
Rebecca Corbett (Waukee, Iowa),
Hannah Bormann (Amana, Iowa),
Sam Nosler (Westfield, Ind.) and
Abby Stephenson (Nevada, Iowa) all played well today. I'm particularly pleased that our seniors are putting in a shift and helped get us the win today. Rachel, Becca (Rodgers) and
Brooke Salisbury (Kearney) all contributed to our goals,
Hannah Wilder (Wheatfield, Ind.) gave us a spark in overtime,
Ali Smith (Lenexa, Kan.) and
Kasey Hurt (Ankeny, Iowa) were solid defensively, and Haley was consistent in goal. We are looking forward to using Wednesday as another opportunity at home to sharpen up defensively."
Drake hosts Omaha for a midweek match on Wednesday with first kick set for 7 p.m. The Bulldogs will then have one final non-conference match at Western Illinois on Sept. 24 before MVC action starts on Sept. 30 with league newcomer Valparaiso traveling to Cownie.
