Women’s Soccer Set for Final Non-Conference Action

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's soccer team hosts Omaha on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. match at the Cownie Soccer Stadium. Following Wednesday's game, Drake visits Western Illinois on Sept. 24 for a 1 p.m. matinee contest. This week is the final non-conference action for the Bulldogs who will start Missouri Valley Conference play against league newcomer Valparaiso on Sept. 30.

Drake's wins over Creighton and UIC last week improved its overall record to 5-3-1. The Bulldogs are vying to finish with a .500 or better record in non-conference action for the second-straight season.

The successful week for the team started with a 1-0 victory at Creighton with freshman Hannah Bormann (Amana, Iowa) scoring the game winner against the Bluejays. It is the first career goal for Bormann, who was named MVC Newcomer of the Week on Monday. She also has tallied two assists this season, which is tied for the team lead.

Drake defeated UIC, 2-1, in overtime at home to close the week as senior Rachel Wanninger (Johnston, Iowa) scored a golden goal to give the Bulldogs their second overtime win this year. Redshirt senior Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) had the first goal of the game as she has 30 career goals, which is two away from the all-time Drake total and tied for ninth in MVC history. Rodgers has a team-high three goals and seven different Bulldogs have scored one goal as the team has netted 10 this year.

Omaha (2-5-1) had its three-match undefeated streak ended by Creighton on Sunday. The Mavericks won the last meeting against Drake, 2-1, in Omaha, Neb. during the 2015 season. The all-time series between the schools is tied at 2-2. Western Illinois (1-7) earned its first win of the year with a 9-1 victory over Chicago State last week. The Leathernecks and Bulldogs are playing for the first time since 2014 as Drake leads the all-time series, 6-4.

The Valpo match will be the first of three consecutive home matches for Drake with Indiana State (Oct. 6) and UNI (Oct. 10) making the trip to Des Moines.
