MACOMB, Ill. – Freshmen
Leroy Enzugusi (Marion, Iowa) scored a late goal for the Drake University men's soccer team in a 2-1 comeback victory at Western Illinois on Wednesday, Sept. 20.
Drake (2-6-0) and Western Illinois (2-5-0) were scoreless until the 60
th minute when the Leathernecks scored the first goal when Drew Whalen played a through ball past Bulldog goalkeeper
Caden McCullough (Evansville, Ind.).
Drake quickly answered in the 62 minute (62:57) as junior
Nic Jaimes (Olathe, Kan.) beat WIU keeper Tim Trilik from five yards out off an assist from
Will Nurre (Ankeny, Iowa). It is the second goal in the past two games for Jaimes, and the first career assist for Nurre.
Enzugusi scored the game winner in the 77nd minute as he slotted it just under Trilik's reach. It is the second goal in two games for Enzugusi, who had a team-leading three in the preseason slate. Jaimes recorded the assist on the goal.
"This was a real gritty performance by the whole squad, and a well-deserved win on the road," said Drake head coach
Gareth Smith. "Our work rate and commitment to battle was high throughout the game, which resulted in a fairly dominant performance. I was most pleased with our character and courage to respond going down 1-0 against the run of play. We were patient and confident that with the number of chance we created we would push on to get the result. We are turning performances into results which is a pleasing to see."
