Women’s Basketball Holds Off Bradley for 84-75 Victory on Sunday

Following Sunday’s road game, Drake returns home to begin the second portion of the MVC slate. The Bulldogs will host Southern Illinois on Feb. 2 with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

PEORIA, Ill. – Five players scored in double figures for the Drake University women's basketball team in an 84-75 victory at Bradley Sunday afternoon in Missouri Valley Conference action.

Redshirt junior Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) and sophomore Brenni Rose (Shawnee, Kan.) each scored 16 points to lead Drake (14-7, 9-0 MVC). 14 of Rose's points came in the final two quarters. It is the most points for Rose in a MVC contest this season. She added seven rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal. Dean, who came off the bench, handed out five assists and pulled down four rebounds.

Redshirt sophomore Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) added 15 points off the bench. Redshirt junior Becca Jonas (Independence, Mo.) scored 12 points and sophomore Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) had 10 points. Jonas nearly recorded a double-double with nine rebounds to go with four assists.

Danielle Brewer paced Bradley (10-10, 4-5 MVC) with 20 points. Three other Braves finished in double digits. As a team, Bradley made 13-of-28 from behind the three-point line. Eight came in the final two quarters as they scored 50 points.

Drake built a 19-point lead midway through the second quarter and led by 12 points at halftime, 39-25. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs held off the Braves as the home team could only pull within eight points and trailed by 10 again after three quarters.

However, after Rose made a basket to start the fourth, Bradley countered with a 12-3 run and trailed, 64-61, with 7:01 left in the game. Rose answered though with a clutch three-pointer from the top of the arc and along with an earlier free throw, she scored four consecutive points to push the lead to 68-61. Drake stretched its lead to 11 points after a layup by Rhine at the 2:50 mark.

The Braves continued to fight, trimming their deficit to six, 78-72, after Gabby Haack's three-pointer with 2:03 remaining. The two teams stopped each other on the next several possessions as the score remained 78-72 until Dean knocked down a pair of free throws with just 23 seconds left. Haack made one more three-pointer, but Dean made three more free throws and Jonas added another as the Bulldogs held on for the road win.

For the second-straight game, Drake's bench played great, as Dean, Rhine and junior Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) scored a combined 39 points. Miller added three boards and three assists. As a team, Drake recorded 26 assists on 30 baskets as seven Bulldogs finished with two or more assists. Drake controlled the inside with a 46-36 rebounding advantage and the Bulldogs scored 44 points in the paint.

To start the game, Bradley scored first with a three-pointer by Brewer, but Hittner answered on the next possession with a basket. The Bulldogs led by three points after one quarter, 17-14, and the Braves stayed within three points at the start of the second quarter. Drake then went on a 16-2 scoring run to lead by 14 at halftime. Dean with nine points, Rhine with eight and Miller with six helped Drake's bench score 23 points.
