Brand Helps Women’s Soccer Rally for 2-1 Road Win over UNI

Following Wednesday’s match, Drake stays on the road as it visits Indiana State Sunday at 12 p.m. The match will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Box Score CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Senior Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.) scored in the 75th minute for the Drake University women's soccer team in a 2-1 comeback win over UNI Wednesday, Oct. 17 evening.

Drake (6-8-1, 3-1-1 MVC) fell behind early as the Bulldogs allowed an own goal in the sixth minute. However, an own goal by UNI (7-7-2, 2-3-1 MVC) in the 23rd minute evened the score in the midweek Missouri Valley Conference match.

Drake, which outshot the Panthers, 16-10 (10-9 in shots on goal), continually pushed the pace and had several quality looks. Eventually the Bulldogs broke through in the 75th minute when junior Cassie Rohan (Palatine, Ill.) took a shot from inside the box that was saved, but Brand collected the rebound and took a left-footed shot low across from the Panthers' goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. Brand, who was injured earlier this season and has played in just seven matches, has 14 career goals and 35 points. Both totals rank 10th all-time at Drake.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsie Stone (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) recorded eight saves for the Bulldogs, including two clutch stops in the final three minutes as the Panthers pushed for the equalizer.

"To concede a soft early goal on the road in such an important MVC game against the run of play put us in a position where we had to play with urgency," said Drake head coach Lindsey Horner. "I felt our players responded appropriately and stayed confident in our game plan. We knew it was important to control the midfield and our players were very good at putting their center-mids under pressure, winning first and second balls and controlling the tempo of our attack. Ali Walls was a fantastic link for us today and it put players like Cassie (Rohan), Hannah (Bormann) and Alyssa on the ball facing goal which made for some exciting chances. UNI caught us a few times on the counter and Shannon (Steurer) had a superb night at center-back eliminating these transition moments. Aside from the miscommunication error early, Kelsie showed what a solid goalkeeper she is growing into. We will enjoy this win for tonight, and quickly turn our energy to prepare for Indiana State."
