WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior
Kyle MacDonald (Burlington, Ontario) tied for fifth place at the fourth annual Zach Johnson Invitational as the Drake University men's golf team finished tied for fifth on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Glen Oaks Country Club.
McDonald closed the two-day tournament with an even par round of 71 and a total score of 218 (73-74-71). Loyola's Tyler Anderson was the individual winner with a total score of 214 (73-69-72) as he edged Bradley's Drake Bushong (67-74-74) and IUPUI's Austin Crowder (74-72-69) by one stroke as the duo each carded a 215.
Drake shot a final round 298 for a total score of 896 (295-303-298) and ended even with Loyola (300-305-291). Bradley won the team title behind a tournament-low round of 286 on the final day and posted a total score of 879 (294-299-286). The Braves finished seven strokes ahead of second place North Dakota State (307-291-288).
"We were in great position with five holes left and in second place and five strokes behind the leader with three players under par," said Drake head coach
Matt Lewis. "Unfortunately, we struggled down the stretch and are disappointed how we finished. This is definitely a good learning experience for the team."
Drake junior
Chase Wicklund (Scottsdale, Ariz.) tied for 15
th with a score of 221 (71-78-72). Senior
Tommi Avant (Chandler, Ariz.) tied for 37
th with a score of 230 (75-77-78).
Freshmen
Lucas Scherf (Grinnell, Iowa) and
Shayne Patel (Edmond, Okla.) rounded out the Bulldogs' efforts with a 234 (83-74-77) and 238 (76-81-81), respectively.
Playing as an individuals, senior
Arjun Reddy (Tulsa, Okla.) shot a final round 74 for a total score of 228 (73-81-74) and tied for 32
nd. Sophomore
Tim Lim (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) posted a 241 (79-83-79) and freshman
Zac Jenkins (Warfield, England) a 252 (88-78-86).
Following the Zach Johnson Invitational, Drake hosts Creighton in duel play Oct. 15 at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa.
