LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University women's basketball team used a huge second quarter scoring run in an 83-77 comeback road win over Nebraska Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Five players scored double figures for Drake (1-0) led by junior
Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) who poured in a game-high 19 points. Senior
Sammie Bachrodt (Wichita, Kan.) added 15 points while redshirt senior
Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior
Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) and redshirt junior
Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) each scored 11 points off the bench. Rhine added 10 rebounds for her own double-double.
Wednesday was a back-and-forth battle between the teams, which both qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Last season at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa, Nebraska held on for an 89-84 win in double-overtime. The two teams delivered another great game to start 2018-19.
Drake, which fell behind 14-0 to start the game and was behind 29-15 at the end of the first quarter, flipped the switch in the second quarter. Hittner scored eight straight points for the Bulldogs and Miller hit a three-pointer as part of 11-3 opening run. The fast start forced a timeout by Nebraska (0-1), which led by just five at 32-27 after it led by 14 after one quarter of play. Out of the timeout, the Bulldogs forced a turnover and then Bachrodt nailed a three-pointer.
Overall, Drake used a 30-7 run in the second quarter, capped by another Bachrodt three-pointer, this one just seconds before the halftime buzzer. Bachrodt and Hittner each scored nine points in the quarter as Drake led 45-36 at halftime.
Nebraska outscored Drake, 21-15, in the third quarter and trailed by just three points going into the fourth quarter. The teams traded baskets in the final quarter and the Cornhuskers even led 67-65 after Sam Haiby made two free throws with just over five minutes left. However, Drake newcomer redshirt junior
Monica Burich (Roseville, Minn.), a transfer from Colorado, made a layup and Dean hit a deep three-pointer to push the Bulldogs' lead to 70-67. Nebraska would get to within one point at the 4:06 mark, but Dean hit another three-pointer and the Bulldogs made their free throws down the stretch as the Cornhuskers tried to extend the game.
Drake stays on the road as it will play at Western Illinois Saturday. Tipoff in Macomb, Ill. against the Leathernecks is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
