Men's Tennis Drake Athletic Communications

Men's Tennis Set to Take on Middle Tennessee

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis team travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn. Saturday to take on Middle Tennessee at 10 a.m.

The Bulldogs lost to No. 47 Oregon 7-0 in their lone game last week. Vinny Gillespie and Barney Thorold fought hard to win their match 6-4. However, Oregon won the other two doubles matches to take the point. The win for Gillespie and Thorold put them at a 10-6 record this year, the most wins of any of Drake's pairings.

Ben Clark and Tom Hands remain tied at the top with 12 singles wins each. Both players took their Oregon opponents to three sets, but neither managed to pull out a win.

Middle Tennessee had won their last three matches, with wins over Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, and South Alabama. MTSU's top singles players are Gian Issa, who has a 16-2 record, and Chris Edge, who has 13 singles wins. Edge and his doubles partner Tom Moonen are 13-4 on the year, leading the Blue Raiders in doubles wins.

After returning from Tennessee, Drake has a doubleheader Saturday, April 7 against Old Dominion at 10 a.m. and Summit League rival UMKC at 6 p.m.
