Men's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season on the Road

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis team travels to Lincoln, Neb. to take on the Nebraska Huskers Wednesday at 5 p.m. After the match in Lincoln, the Bulldogs will head to Normal, Ill. on Sunday for a 2 p.m. match to close out the regular season against Illinois State.

Last Saturday, the Bulldogs picked up two wins over Wichita State, 4-0, and Valparaiso, 6-1. In the match against Wichita State, Drake closed out the doubles portion of the competition with a 7-6 win that took a tiebreaker set to decide the winner. In singles, Drake swept the Shockers 3-0, all of which were won in straight sets.

Against Valparaiso, Drake had another strong match and only lost one match in singles. Just like against Wichita State, the Bulldogs shut down the Crusaders and got all four of their singles points in straight sets.

On the weekend, Ben Clark and Tom Hands both went 2-0 in singles play to bring their win total to 15 each. The doubles pairing of Vinny Gillespie and Barny Thorold are 13-7 on the season at the top spot.

Nebraska is led by senior Linus Erhart, who has a team-best 14 singles wins. Erhart and Toby Boyer lead the team with 11 doubles wins, as the pair started the season with six straight wins, but have since struggled with a record of 5-5.

Illinois State holds a 11-8 record this season and will face off against Omaha Saturday before taking on the Bulldogs. The Redbirds are led by Christoffer Greve, who is one of three players who have 12 or more singles wins. In doubles, Andreas Boers and Pol Rius Botifoll are 10-4 this season to lead the team.

After this week's matches, Drake will prepare to head out to Denver, Colo. for the Summit League Championship. The league tournament will take place Apr. 27-28, and matchups will be announced at a later date.
