WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's soccer team downed No. 20 UIC, 3-1, Friday night at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines.
Lucas Bartlett (Overland Park, Kan.),
Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan.) and
Leroy Enzugusi (Marion, Iowa) scored goals for Drake (2-1-0), which knocked off its second ranked opponent this week. The two teams played at Valley Stadium because of heavy rain at the Cownie Soccer Complex earlier in the day that left the field unplayable.
Bartlett, the hero in Monday's upset over No. 9 Butler with the winning goal in the 87
th minute, Friday connected on a twisting half bicycle kick off a free kick by
Cole Poppen (Ankeny, Iowa) for the game's first goal in the 19
th minute (19:21). Just minutes (22:55) later Poppen sent a corner kick in from the far side of the field that Enna blasted in to increase the lead to 2-0 over UIC (2-1-0).
Drake padded its lead early in the second half, courtesy of
Leroy Enzugusi (Marion, Iowa). Enzugusi scored his first goal of the season after he took a pass from
Paul Ciszewski (Germantown, Wis.) and then beat the Flames defense and smashed his shot in the lower left corner out of the reach of the goalkeeper, Sawyer Jackman.
"Playing two top-20 teams back-to-back is tough at any time and to get two wins is a tremendous credit to the team," said head coach
Gareth Smith. "Tonight, was another hard-earned win against an excellent UIC team who showed tonight why they are ranked as one of the top teams in the country. We were pleased with our overall organization, intensity, work ethic and competitive bite throughout the game. We knew that UIC had an impressive front line and that we would have to show a high level of discipline and organization to keep them from scoring in the first half. We continue to create good goal scoring opportunities and scored two excellent goals by Bartlett and Enna heading into the break. It was great to see Enzugusi get on the score sheet as well to extend our lead to 3-0."
The Flames went on the scoreboard late in the match with a goal by Max Todd in the 75
th minute.
"We tired a little near the end of the second half and at times weathered a high level of pressure from UIC," Smith said. "However, we showed real steel/character to see out the game and get yet another impressive win. We turn our attention to a difficult road match against UMKC and look to build on this performance by focusing on one game at a time."
Following Friday's home match, Drake visits UMKC Sept. 4. First kick Tuesday night in Kansas City, Mo. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
