TULSA, Okla. – Cole Poppen, a transfer from Tulsa University, converted a penalty kick early in overtime to send the Drake University men's soccer team past his former team, 2-1, Saturday, Sept. 15 afternoon at Hurricane Stadium in Tulsa, Okla.
 
It is the first overtime victory this season for Drake (4-3-0), which had lost its two previous extra -time contests. No. 23 Tulsa (3-3-1) lost its second-straight home match as the two teams played each other for the first time since 2013. It is the first win for the Bulldogs in Tulsa since 1996.
 
"We are delighted with what was a hard-fought victory on the road against another top 25 team," said head coach Gareth Smith. "We showed real character, ambition and quality to get this result as this is a tough place to play. I was happy with how we started as we showed a high level of intensity and desire to go at Tulsa. We had a chance to take the lead early through Leroy with good build up play but just couldn't finish. It was an excellent performance all around with some real special moments."
 
Poppen was awarded the penalty kick in the 93^rd minute (93:55) after a Tulsa foul in the box. He buried the ball in the net for his second goal of the season.
 
Nic Jaimes scored the match's first goal in the 18^th minute (18:24) after he beat the Golden Hurricane's backline and blasted it in from a short distance in the box. It is the first goal for Jaimes this season.
 
Minutes later, goalkeeper Jared Brown, made a tremendous save on a Tulsa penalty kick by Chase Bromstedt to preserve the Bulldogs' 1-0 lead. However, three minutes later the Golden Hurricane were awarded another penalty kick, taken by Juan Sanchez, who converted the equalizer this time.
 
The Golden Hurricane took the next three shots, but Brown saved one attempt and the other two were high or wide. Out of halftime, Steven Enna, Leroy Enzugusi, Erik Fahner and Ryan Johnston all had shots but couldn't convert. Brown withstood an aggressive attack by Tulsa, making two saves in the first 11 minutes. After a mandatory water break due to the heat in the 69^th minute, the teams traded shots before going to overtime.
 
Brown finished with seven saves. Drake overcame a 16-8 shot advantage by Tulsa as well as 16 corner kicks by the Golden Hurricane to just four by the Bulldogs.
 
"For the first goal, it was a great run from the back by Nic (Jaimes) who dribbled past four Tulsa players and showed good composure to slot his shot past the goalkeeper," Smith commented on his team's third win over a top-25 team this season. "Jared (Brown) was excellent yet again and showed his quality by making an amazing save on the penalty at 1-0 which was a key moment in the game. Tulsa is one of the top teams in the country and they showed their quality for long phases of the game. Our area of growth is that we have to continue to work on regaining possession against teams at this level. One of the most pleasing aspect of our performances was our organization, discipline and resolve when defending. We knew that we had the ability to create chances and win the game and that's what we did. Great credit to Cole for showing the courage and composure to step up and bury the penalty to win the game in overtime."
 
Following Saturday's match, Drake begins Missouri Valley Conference play at Loyola on Sept. 22. The match in Chicago will start at 7 p.m. and be shown on ESPN3.
