Horner Claims Career Win No. 100 as Women's Soccer Beats Evansville, 1-0

Drake (4-8-1) picked up its first win in MVC play this season.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Drake University women's soccer head coach Lindsey Horner earned career win No. 100 with a 1-0 victory at Evansville on Saturday. In her 12 seasons at the helm, Horner has coached two MVC regular season championship teams and 54 All-MVC selections.

Under Horner's guidance, the Drake women have been recognized for their academic success 17 years in a row by the United Soccer Coaches Association.

"The players got me with the water cooler after the game, so they should be on their toes this week," Horner said. "I'm not sure if this milestone just ages me as I have a lot of losses to go along with the 100 wins, but I've enjoyed a lot of fun victories with Kevin Brennan, Mike Regan, Danielle Oswald-Thole, Hugo Macedo, Sonia Allison-Rodriguez, Andrew Blalock, Jenn Ogren, Jason Wichman, and Heath Weeks. These coaches and our players and alumni have done the brunt of the work."

The Bulldogs withstood intense pressure from the Aces in the early stages, warding off six shots and five corner kicks in the opening 20 minutes.

"We had a lot of possession to start, and Evansville let us build and play out, but we found ourselves overplaying early and making some silly decisions when we had time to make simple choices, creating transitional moments for them," Horner said. "We did a very good job of defending in transition and absorbed a flurry of their corners before we scored.

Drake stemmed the tide and took the lead for good on a goal by Cassie Rohan in the 42nd minute. It was the senior's first goal of the year and Drake's first goal in the first half this season. Delaney Goertzen and Ali Burke were credited with assists on the play.

"Cassie has the ability to score goals for us so it's great to see her back and have her bravery today match her talent," Horner said.

Erika Townley nearly doubled Drake's lead moments later. She collected a rebound and ripped a left-footed strike that curled just wide of the far post. Rohan's goal and Townley's near miss gave the Bulldogs great momentum at the break.

Drake began the second half as Evansville did the first frame, firing five shots in the opening seven minutes after halftime. Hannah Bormann highlighted the string of attack with a sweet volley on a crossed-in ball, but Evansville's goalkeeper hauled in the attempt.

Kelsie Stone recorded three saves for the Bulldogs, all coming during the first-half flurry by the Aces. Stone made a game-clinching decision in the 84th minute when she dashed off her line to pressure Evansville's Mikayla Harvey into rushing her shot, forcing it wide left.

"Our backs were physical and imposing, our midfield started to connect passes, and our targets did a good job of being a link," Horner said. "I'd love for us to be more composed when a team is chasing the game, but I did like our mentality today and look forward to carrying this momentum into a big game against UNI on Wednesday."

The Bulldogs host in-state rival Northern Iowa on Wednesday as Horner aims for career win No. 101.
