BETTENDORF, Iowa – The Drake University women's soccer team fell, 1-0, in a closely-contested match against the Illinois State Redbirds on Friday afternoon at TBK Bank Sports Complex. The result snapped the Bulldogs' four-game win streak and run of four-straight clean sheets.
Kate Del Fava scored the game-winning goal for the Redbirds in the 44
th minute, ending Drake's shutout streak at 465 minutes and 52 seconds.
The Bulldogs (7-9-1, 4-3-0 MVC) finish the regular season fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, and they will host a first-round tournament game at a time and location to be determined.
Illinois State applied pressure early with three shots, including two by Del Fava, in the opening three minutes of play. The Redbirds outshot Drake 17-8 on the day.
Kelsie Stone performed exceptionally in net as she stopped seven shots – two off her career high.
The Bulldogs began the second half aggressively as they earned a corner kick and fired a shot in the opening minutes.
Cassie Rohan and
Shelley Lyjak led Drake with two shots apiece for the game.
Lyjak and
Erika Townley both got off shots in Drake's last-ditch effort for an equalizer, but their attempts were stopped by a sea of Redbird defenders.
