Penn Scores 18 As Men's Basketball Defeats Lehigh, 74-58

Guard adds a season-high nine assists as well.

DES MOINES, IowaRoman Penn posted season highs with 18 points and nine assists as he led Drake to a 74-58 victory over Lehigh on Thursday night at the Knapp Center.

Penn sparked a 9-0 run in the second half when he found D.J. Wilkins for a 3-pointer. Penn then knocked down a 3-pointer of his own before hitting Wilkins for another triple.

After Lehigh answered with a layup and a free throw, Penn hit a short jumper before assisting on a layup by Anthony Murphy. Moments later, Penn went high off the glass for a transition layup to cap a 17-3 run that had his fingerprints all over it.

Penn scored or assisted on 13-straight points during the outburst as the Bulldogs' lead ballooned to 61-40 – Drake's biggest advantage of the night – with 13:07 to play.

"We've raved about him for over a year now, so I'm glad he's making us out not to be liars," Drake head coach Darian DeVries said of Penn, who sat out last season after transferring from Siena. "He just controls the game so much. He's so important to what we're doing at both ends of the floor. We're going to rely on him a lot to run the show. We run a lot of stuff through him and put a lot on his shoulders, but I think he's more than capable. He was really good tonight."

Brady Ernst made his season debut after missing the first four games due to offseason back surgery. Ernst hauled in two rebounds in his first two minutes off the bench, contributing to the Bulldogs' 38-25 rebound advantage.

Garrett Sturtz snared a career-best 14 rebounds, shattering his previous mark of eight. He collected 10 boards in the first half, one short of Lehigh's first-half total.

"He had 14 rebounds and he barely jumps over a phone book," DeVries said of Sturtz. "He's always in the right place at the right time. He just does so many things right out there for you that he's a really good piece to add to the rest of the group. I love the toughness he brings, the grit. That's why he's out there."

Drake limited Lehigh to 39.3 percent shooting from the floor and 30.8 percent from 3-point range. The Bulldogs have held their opponents to under 60 points in all four of their victories this season.

With Thursday's triumph, the Bulldogs conclude their three-game homestand on a high note. Drake has won eight games in a row at the Knapp Center dating back to last season, and the Bulldogs have won 15-straight non-conference home games.

The Bulldogs will travel to Estero, Fla., next week as they take part in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Drake will tip off against Miami (OH) at 12:30 p.m. CST on Nov. 25.
