Defending MVC Regular-Season Champs To Meet Tournament Champs In League Opener

Bulldogs return to the Knapp Center Saturday

The Drake University men's basketball team travels to Bradley to open up the Missouri Valley Conference season New Year's Eve at 6 p.m.

The league opener will be broadcast on ESPN+ from Bradley's Carver Arena.

Drake, the league's defending regular-season champion, opens the league season on the road after navigating conference play with a 10-3 record to mark the program's second-most wins before beginning conference play in program history.

The Bulldogs' recorded their 10th win with an 85-80 win at Air Force prior to the holiday break behind a career-high 22 points and nine assists from Roman Penn. The offensive outburst was one of the Bulldogs' best of the season as they shot 53 percent from the field and converted on 13 three-pointers. Last season, the Bulldogs led the league in scoring at more than 75 points per game to claim the regular-season crown.

Bradley begins league play at home as the conference's defending tournament champion and NCAA participant. The Braves were 9-4 in non-conference action after defeating Toledo Dec. 28.

Drake swept Bradley last season and has won four of the last five meetings in the series.

Following Tuesday's Valley opener, the Bulldogs return home to host Indiana State Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. Drake has won 11-straight games at the Knapp Center.
