Women's Soccer Bests North Dakota State, 2-1

The Bulldogs will host South Dakota on Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's soccer team prevailed 2-1 in an exhilarating match against North Dakota State on Friday night at Tiger Field in West Des Moines.

North Dakota State lit up the scoreboard first courtesy of a penalty kick by Ellie Schneider in the 33rd minute. Megan Valenzuela converted the equalizer for the Bulldogs in the 80th minute with a header off a corner kick by Vanessa Kavan.

Drake also converted the game-winner via set piece in the 87th minute when Kavan delivered a corner kick into the center of the box where Rebecka Musungu drilled the game-winner just over the goalkeeper's outstretched hands.

"There was a sense of belief among the players that we could come back," Drake head coach Lindsey Horner said. "We played with enough urgency to push the tempo, but also enough patience to not try to play the killer pass or take crazy shots from distance."

Musungu, a redshirt freshman from Andover, Minn., and Valenzuela, a sophomore out of Omaha, Neb., each notched the first goal of their career.

"We are very pleased that we have a deep roster," Horner said. "Megan and Rebecka were in a position to impact the game, and they did so in a big way."

The Bulldogs' offense exploded for season highs in multiple categories, including goals (two), assists (two), shots (16), shots on goal (seven), and corner kicks (11). Drake also earned its first penalty kick of the season but was unable to convert. North Dakota State entered Friday's match ranked 13th in the nation in goals allowed per game (.322).

"We had momentum until our missed penalty," Horner said. "Then we got rattled and started to play faster than we needed to. Once they converted their penalty kick, we started to panic. I thought the team did a much better job in the second half of getting after NDSU's backline, resulting in corners."

Junior goalkeeper Kelsie Stone thwarted five shots by the Bison, only conceding one goal via penalty kick. Horner praised her "tremendous" back four of Annie Schmitz, Audrey Vidmar, Sam Nosler, and Delaney Goertzen for their work defensively.

The match was held at Tiger Field in West Des Moines after Cownie Soccer Complex was deemed unplayable due to rain.

The Bulldogs (2-4-1) are scheduled to return to Cownie Soccer Complex for their next match against South Dakota on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.
