Men's and Women's Soccer to Host Doubleheader Friday Night

The Drake women kick off at 5:00 followed by the men at 7:30.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Both of Drake University's soccer teams will be in action at Cownie Soccer Complex on Friday night with the women's team hosting South Dakota State at 5 p.m. before the men take on UNLV at 7:30 p.m.

The Drake women have challenged themselves with a difficult schedule early in the year, having already faced three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago. The Bulldogs most recently lost 3-0 at Saint Louis on Sunday, Sept. 1.

Junior goalkeeper Kelsie Stone is building on her All-MVC performance in 2018 as she has already recorded 16 saves this season, including a career-high nine against No. 21 Baylor.

The men's team is looking to build on a solid performance in its home-opener Monday against Milwaukee. The Bulldogs controlled 60 percent of the possession and gained a 14-6 advantage in shot attempts but dropped the match 2-0.

Forward Leroy Enzugusi scored Drake's opening goal of the season in the 79th minute against Oral Roberts. The Marion, Iowa, native leads the Bulldogs in points, shots, and shots on goal. Enzugusi paced Drake with team-bests in goals (eight) and points (17) in 2018.

Live stats and live streams are available for both matches.

Scouting South Dakota State

The Jackrabbits opened the year with two victories over Utah State and Idaho State before dropping their last two matches to Creighton and Kansas State. South Dakota State was picked to finish second in the Summit League behind Denver University this season.

SDSU boasts three returning players who earned spots on the All-Summit League team in 2018. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Smither is the two-time defending Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year. She posted 10 shutouts last season and helped the Jackrabbits limit opponents to 0.71 goals per game.

Senior forward Leah Manuleleua is a two-time Summit League honoree and led SDSU with 14 points (five goals, four assists) in 2018. She has netted a team-best two goals so far this season.

Senior midfielder Carina McLennan is another player to watch for the Jackrabbits, having been named a second-team all-conference performer last season.

The Jackrabbits posted a 12-6-1 (7-1 Summit) record in 2018 en route to their second consecutive regular season conference title.

Scouting UNLV

The Rebels have lost in overtime in both of their matches to begin the 2019 season. They lost 2-1 in double overtime at UC Santa Barbara to begin the year before falling to San Diego State, 3-2, in overtime in their most recent match.

UNLV was picked to finish fifth in the WAC's preseason poll and will return seven starters from last season's team which finished 10-10-1. Three Rebels – junior forward Marco Gonzalez, senior midfielder Timo Mehlich, and senior defender Tyler Allen – picked up preseason all-conference honors.

Gonzalez led the WAC last season with ten goals and 23 points. He was a first team All-WAC selection and was also named to the All-West Region third team.

Mehlich is a two-time All-WAC honoree who posted 10 points a year ago off three goals and four assists, and Allen is a stalwart on the Rebels' backline, having started 45 games over the past three seasons.
