Men’s Basketball Takes Recent Momentum Into Valpo

The Bulldogs have won two-straight games heading into their fourth Valley game.

Following two thrilling wins at the Knapp Center to return to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference standings, the Drake University men's basketball team takes to the road to face Valparaiso Saturday. Tipoff on ESPN3 is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Valpo's Athletics-Recreation Center.

Drake (12-4, 2-1 MVC) has won two-straight games and eight of its last 10 games heading into Saturday's tilt. In its previous outing, Drake defeated fellow defending MVC co-champion Loyola, 65-62.

Liam Robbins scored 20 points with nine rebounds and matched a school record with seven blocks in the win. Robbins' most recent outstanding performance came while not only battling the MVC preseason Player of the Year, Cameron Krutwig, but also the flu. Robbins has scored 20 or more points in three of his last five games and in double figures in eight straight games. In addition to putting his name in the Drake record book for blocks in a game, he is already sixth all-time in single-season blocks this season with 42 and fifth in career blocks with 77.

On the perimeter, Roman Penn continues to shine, averaging 9.3 assists per game in MVC play. Penn is one of five Bulldogs enjoying a homecoming this weekend as he, D.J. Wilkins, Anthony Murphy, Tremell Murphy and Jonah Jackson all hail from Northwestern Indiana.

Last season, the Murphys and Wilkins helped the Bulldogs sweep the season series from the Crusaders. Valpo (8-8, 1-2 MVC) is coming off a 13-point loss at SIU in which Javon Freeman-Liberty scored 16 points. Freeman-Liberty is averaging an MVC best 20.9 points per game.

Following Saturday's game, the Bulldogs will have a long week of practice and preparation before returning to the Knapp Center, where they have won 13-straight games, to host Illinois State Jan .16.
