Women's Basketball Falls On Buzzer-Beater at No. 20/18 Missouri State

Bulldogs rally in the second half before being clipped on a last-second three-pointer

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Sydney Manning hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for No. 20/18 Missouri State, who escaped with a 69-67 win over the Drake University women's basketball team Friday night at the JQH Arena.

Manning, who led Missouri State (13-2, 3-0 MVC) with 16 points, picked up a deflected pass in the final seconds of the contest and let the basketball go just in time. The Lady Bears closed the game with eight-straight points.

Drake (9-5, 1-1 MVC) was paced by Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) who finished with 23 points while Becca Hittner (Urbandale, Iowa) had 16 points. Hittner had a season-high five assists while Rhine pulled down seven rebounds. Monica Burich (Roseville, Minn.) scored 10 points off the bench and added four rebounds.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs used a 7-2 run that featured a Hittner 3-point play and four points by Rhine to take the Bulldogs' largest lead at 65-58. Rhine scored her final bucket with 1:37 left for a six-point lead, but it was the team's last bucket.

Early turnovers hampered the Bulldogs as five miscues led to five points for the Lady Bears, which led 11-5 at the game's first media timeout. Missouri State held a 20-10 lead after the first quarter helped by 10 second-chance points and seven points off seven turnovers by Drake. Rhine scored a game-high six points in the quarter.

Drake bounced back in the second quarter outscoring Missouri State, 19-13, to trail 33-29 at halftime. The Bulldogs held the Lady Bears scoreless the final 2:34. Despite going 0-of-5 from three-point range, Drake shot 40.0 percent from the floor and made seven free throws in the quarter. Rhine finished with game-high 10 points while Negaard provided a spark off the bench with five points.

Out of halftime, Drake briefly took a one-point lead 35-34 with 6-1 run, but Missouri State answered with a 7-0 run that forced a timeout. The rest of the third quarter was back-and-forth with five ties and six lead changes as Collier made it 52-all with a layup with just 10 seconds left in the third quarter before the tightly contested fourth quarter that went down to the final second.

The Bulldogs close their first MVC road trip at SIU Sunday at 2 p.m.
