Drake Student-Athletes Achieve 100 Percent Voter Registration

Staff and team leaders work together to achieve civic involvement.

One hundred percent of eligible Drake student-athletes are now registered to vote in the upcoming election, Drake Athletics and its All One group announced Thursday, Oct. 22.

"I am so proud that all of our eligible student-athletes have registered to vote in this year's election," said Drake director of athletics Brian Hardin. "For many of them, this will be the first time they have cast a ballot. They understand voting is our civic duty and responsibility."

The impressive participation was achieved with the guidance of the Bulldogs' All One group of coaches, staff and student-athletes. The group worked with voting captains on each team tasked with the responsibility of educating their teammates on the importance of voting, assisting their teammates with the registration process and preparations to vote Nov. 3 or earlier.

"This is an opportunity to have their voices heard on issues important to them," Hardin said. "At Drake, we pride ourselves on developing student-athletes who excel in the classroom, competition and community. By achieving 100 percent voter registration, our student-athletes are displaying their commitment to democracy."

To help foster that commitment, Drake Athletics will abstain from practices and team functions on Election Day to ensure every registered student-athlete has ample opportunity to vote. Additionally, the Knapp Center will serve as a satellite voting location for Polk County.
