Drake vs. Kansas State Postgame Notes

Team Notes
  • The win was Drake's fourth-straight season-opening win.
  • The win was Drake's first on the road to open a season since a 61-59 win at UIC Nov. 9, 2013.
  • Drake improved to 76-50 in season openers.
  • The road win was the 10th road win in Coach DeVries' tenure. Drake had 10 road wins in five seasons prior to DeVries' arrival.
  • The win was Drake's first win at a Big 12 opponent since defeating Iowa State, 80-78, in Ames Dec. 3, 2006.
  • Drake scored 80 or more points for the 17th time under Darian DeVries. Drake is 17-0 when scoring 80 or more points in the last three seasons.
  • The win was Drake's 22nd in 28 non-conference games under DeVries.
  • Drake had 17 assists, its most in a game since Jan. 22, 2020.
  • Drake's nine steals tied for its most over the last two seasons.
  • Drake shot 48.3 percent in the win and 59.5 percent inside the arc. Drake is 40-14 under DeVries when shooting 40 percent or better. 
  • Drake committed just eight turnovers, tied for its third-fewest over the last 35 games. Only one Bulldog had multiple turnovers.
 
Individual Notes
  • Five Bulldogs appeared in their first games as a Bulldog. Shanquan Hemphill, Darnell Brodie, Okay Djamgouz, Issa Samake and Nate Ferguson all made their debut in the Blue & White. For Djamgouz, Samake and Ferguson, it was their first collegiate game and all three scored their first points. Samake also blocked two shots.
  • Sturtz's double-double was the first of his career has scored in double figures 16 times in his career and in four of his last six games. He shot 3-of-3 from the field and has not missed more than two shots in a game since Jan. 19, 2020. He was also 9-of-10 at the free-throw line (both career highs) and matched a career high with four steals.
  • Roman Penn's eight assists marked the 24th time in 35 games at Drake he has had five or more assists. He has 22 assists in his last three games.
  • Jonah Jackson was 3-of-8 from the three-point arc and has hit three or more three-pointers in a game 11 times in his career. He has not converted on a two-point shot in his career and has only attempted six two-point shots. He has made 69 three-pointers at Drake.
  • D.J. Wilkins matched a career-high with five assists. He has had five assists in a game eight times in his career.

Series Notes
  • Drake improved to 7-20 all-time against K-State
  • Drake improved to 3-10 against the Wildcats in Manhattan and 1-0 in Bramlage Coliseum.
  • The win was Drake's first against K-State since Dec. 12, 1955 and first in Manhattan since Jan. 16, 1923
  • The meeting was the first between the two teams since 1956.
