Men's Basketball Faces USD In Little Apple Classic

Bulldogs and Coyotes to meet on a neutral court Friday afternoon.

The Drake University men's basketball team continues play at the Little Apple Classic Friday at 1 p.m. against South Dakota in the first meeting between the two programs since 2017. 

The game will be streamed at GoDrakeBulldogs.com/watch and via radio on ESPN 1350-AM and the TuneIn app.

Drake opened its 2020-21 season in impressive fashion Wednesday with an 80-70 win at Kansas State to open the Little Apple Classic. Every Bulldog that stepped on the court scored, led by Garrett Sturtz's 15-point, 10-rebound double-double. 

Tremell Murphy made his return to the court with a 12-point, 7-rebound effort while all-conference guard Roman Penn continued to shine with a 9-point, 8-assist opener. 

Five Bulldogs made their debut in the season opener with three scoring their first collegiate points. Shanquan Hemphill led the newcomers as the transfer from Green Bay posted 10 points to help Drake become Drake became the seventh non-conference opponent to win at Bramlage Coliseum in the last 15 years. 

South Dakota opened its season in Manhattan as well with an 84-61 loss to Colorado. The Coyotes' Stanley Umude scored a game-high 24 points on 22 shots in the loss. USD shot 30 percent in the loss and was 3-of-20 from the three-point arc.

Friday's meeting is the first of two between the teams this season as Drake is scheduled to visit the Coyotes Dec. 16. Drake and USD last met in 2017-18 on the Coyotes home court. USD prevailed in that contest, 93-65.
