Men's Basketball Aims to Keep Non-Conference Streak Alive vs. St. Ambrose

The Bulldogs have defeated 19-straight non-conference opponents at home.

The 3-0 Drake men's basketball team continues its homestand Sunday, Dec. 6, against Saint Ambrose at 2 p.m.

The game will be streamed on ESPN3 and available on radio via ESPN 1350-AM.

Drake has proved it has plenty of offensive firepower in its first three games, twice hitting the 80-point mark and averaging 78.7 points to remain unbeaten at 3-0 this season. In its last game, an 87-66 win over Omaha, Drake never trailed and shot 50 percent or better from both the field and three-point arc. The Bulldogs' efficiency was balanced by another dominant defensive showing, holding Omaha to 38.5 percent shooting for the Bulldogs' 19th-straight home non-conference win.

Five Bulldogs scored in double-figures in the last outing, led by D.J. Wilkins. He scored 19 points, one shy of matching a career high, while shooting 7-of-8 and a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range.

Roman Penn continued his unselfish play with 10 assists to add to his 10 points for his second career double-double. He currently leads the MVC in assists per game with 7.0 per game. Shanquan Hemphill was another of the five total players to score in double-digits, with 12 for his third straight-game in double figures. Darnell Brodie and Tremell Murphy controlled the paint with a combined 12 rebounds as Drake outscored Omaha in the paint, 48-26.

Drake's defensive prowess has given the team an average margin of victory of 15.7 points, with opponents shooting 38 percent against the Bulldogs. Third-year head coach Darian DeVries also has one of his deepest rosters to date as his bench has scored 30 or more points in all three games and has scored 44.8 percent of the Bulldogs' points to date.

Saint Ambrose, an NAIA program and member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, has one official game under its belt, an 83-62 win over East-West University Oct. 31. Friday evening, the team suffered a 98-53 exhibition loss at UNI. John Kerr led the Bees in that outing with eight points and 10 boards.

Sunday's game marks the first time the two teams met since 1945 when Drake won 36-35. The teams split their four-game series from 1943-45, with each team winning a pair on its home floor.

Following Sunday's game, Drake remains home for the third game of a four-game homestand when it takes on McKendree Wednesday, Dec. 9  at 7 p.m.
